A big Mahalo to Shaun Stenshol and Pamela Miedtke-Wolf of Bio-Beetle Rental Cars on Maui for their commitment to using sustainable, locally produced biodiesel!  Founded in January of 2003, Bio-Beetle was the nation’s first 100% biodiesel car rental company.  Owners Shaun and Pam said they wanted to give people the opportunity to drive a sustainably fueled car when they visited Maui to see firsthand that it’s not necessary to depend on fossil fuels for your vacation transportation.

“We all make choices, everyday, that have an impact on the world around us and we believe that we all should do everything we can to protect this place we call home,” says Shaun.  “Reducing our use of fossil fuels is one of those choices, and supporting renewable fuels, such as biodiesel, is one thing we can do right now! “

Owning a green car rental company has its challenges because customers ultimately want the lowest price, even if it isn’t the best choice for the health of our planet.  But Shaun says, “fortunately there is a small group of people out there who want to do the right thing, even if it costs a little more, because they understand the importance of renting the greener option when it’s available. “

More than just fueling their cars with biodiesel, the folks at Bio-Beetle believe they are the greenest rental car company on the planet.  They don’t use toxic cleaners, they lend free items like coolers and re-usable grocery bags, and they strongly encourage recycling.  Shaun and Pam also work very hard to be green in their own everyday life.  Both of their personal cars have been powered by biodiesel since 1998 and they recently built a bamboo house that is 100% off the grid with solar power and hot water, a rainwater catchment system, and a big garden.  For them, being green is a way of life.
